Setup & Operation

How can I get answers to general questions regarding how the ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box works?

You can view ScoopFree in operation by clicking here or download the entire User Guide by clicking here (6MB PDF).

Why isn't my unit operating when turned on?

Make sure the AC adapter is properly connected to the box and to the wall outlet. Check wall outlet to be sure it has power.

What does a green indicator light flashing mean?

The indicator light can flash at three different speeds:

  1. Rapid flashing: This means the rake has stalled and/or there is an obstruction in the box.  Sometimes this occurs when the waste trap is too full.  If the light is flashing rapidly, remove any obstructions and/or change the cartridge.  Then reset the box by pressing the button.
  2. Moderate flashing: This means something is blocking the infrared sensors.  If your cat has left the box and the light is flashing moderately, ensure nothing is obstructing the sensors.  If a piece of litter is stuck inside the sensor holes, you can use a dry Q-Tip to remove it.
  3. Slow pulse flashing: This indicates the litter box is in countdown mode, which begins when your cat leaves the litter box.  20 minutes later the rake will sweep the litter bed.  The light will glow steady green when the rake finishes raking the litter.

How do I install the hood?

Remove the four plugs located on top of the litter box.  You can use your fingernail or any flat edge to remove these.  Put the rear two plugs in first then attach the front two.  The hood should fit snugly into the holes.

Litter & Litter Cartridges

How can I extend the use of my cartridges?

ScoopFree is designed to be left alone for up to thirty days with one cat and up to two weeks with two cats.  However, some users choose to mix up the litter crystals once or twice between cartridge changes, and they report this makes their cartridges last longer.  Mixing the litter from behind the rake can be beneficial, but there is no need to mix up litter from the waste compartment.  Further, when installing new litter cartridges, do not place litter underneath the purple waste lid.  This too will extend the life of the cartridge.

Can I add litter or use another litter in my ScoopFree box?

Never add litter to your ScoopFree box or use another type of litter!!! The Fresh Step Crystal litter in the disposable litter tray cartridge is formulated especially for ScoopFree. The amount is carefully pre-measured for optimal performance. Too much or too little litter may cause your ScoopFree to malfunction. The only exception is you may add two handfuls of your old litter to ScoopFree litter when you first use the box.

Can I reuse the litter tray cartridge by throwing out the old litter and adding new litter?

The cartridge is designed to be environmentally friendly and to break down with time. Using it for more than 30 days per cat risks failure, causing liquids to leak and litter to spill on the floor if the cartridge bottom breaks.

Where can I purchase replacement ScoopFree litter tray cartridges filled with Fresh Step Crystal litter?

Leading pet specialty stores carry ScoopFree disposable cartridges. You can also order them from this website by clicking here.

How do I change and/or replace the litter tray cartridge?

When the litter becomes saturated or the waste trap becomes full, replace the cover on the used litter tray cartridge. Then toss into the trash. Simply replace the used ScoopFree litter tray cartridge with a new one. Click here for more information on "Changing the Cartridge."

Is the cartridge good for the environment?

The ScoopFree disposable litter tray cartridge is made primarily from environmentally friendly paper board. The Fresh Step Crystal litter is made from a natural product used in some foods (for humans!) and will not harm the environment.

Cleaning & Maintenance

How often do I have to scoop out the waste?

Most users never have to remove the waste, which is automatically raked into a covered trap built into the disposable litter tray cartridge. Scoop Free is designed to be hands-off for up to 30 days with one cat.

How much cleaning is required?

ScoopFree needs little cleaning because the parts most likely to get soiled or dirty are thrown out every month. Occasionally, you may choose to wipe down the litter box or the rake. Click here for more "Care and Cleaning" details.

ScoopFree & Your Cats

Will ScoopFree accommodate my large cat?

The ScoopFree automatic litter box has a large litter bed area that can accommodate up to two large cats.  In fact it has the same usable litter bed area (14”x14”) as the Littermaid® Elite Mega.

How many ScoopFrees do I need if I have more than two cats?

The ScoopFree is optimally designed for 1 or 2 cat households.  If you have 3 or more cats, you will need a litter box for each two cats.

What if my cats refuse to use the new ScoopFree box?

In extensive testing, ScoopFree has been accepted by most cats. If your cat does not use ScoopFree right away, please follow the steps outlined in “Acclimating Your Cat” section of the User Guide to help your cat quickly adopt his or her new ScoopFree litter box.

Will my large cat be able to use the ScoopFree automatic litter box with the ScoopFree hood?

Most large cats have no trouble using ScoopFree with a hood.  Ensure the hood is properly installed. Remove the four plugs on top of the litter box with your fingernail or any flat edge.  Put the rear pegs in first, then press in the front pegs.  The hood should fit snugly into the holes.

ScoopFree Safety

What if my cat comes back while it is raking? Is it safe?

The rake will not start to move if a cat is in the litter box.  Further, the mechanism has been designed with no pinch points, and the force required to safety-stall the rake is substantially less than most competitive products.

What if my cat jumps back in before the rake moves to clean the box?

The countdown timer will reset for another 20 minutes if your cat returns. The rake will not start moving if there is an object in the box obstructing the infrared sensors.

Are there other safety precautions of which I should be aware?

The ScoopFree automatic litter box has shown to be very safe in testing, but you may click here to view "Safety Precautions."

Summary of Features and Benefits

The ScoopFree Advantage

Scoop Free offers many advantages vs. other automatic litter boxes: hands-off convenience for up to 30 days per cat, superior odor control, easy-to-dispose-of litter cartridges, and quieter and more reliable operation.

Convenience

Scoop Free is a revolutionary and new automatic litter box that can be left alone for up to 20 to 30 days with one cat and 10 to 15 days with two cats!

Hands Off Operation

Insert the cartridge filled with Fresh Step® Crystal litter and then leave it alone! That’s right: there is nothing to fill, empty or clean for up to 20 to 30 days with one cat and 10 to 15 days with two cats!  Scoop Free is automatic, raking waste after the feline leaves the box so there is nothing messy to see or touch.  Just load it, leave it and love it.  Scoop Free is the hands-off and touch-free litter box.

Superior Odor Control

Scoop Free cartridges use Fresh Step Crystal litter, which does not clump.  Instead the crystals absorb the liquids and dehydrate the solids, providing unbeatable odor control versus clay and clumping litters.  Odors get locked inside the crystals leaving the litter box smelling clean and fresh.  And there are no clumps to stick to the rake or bottom of the box.

It Shrinks the Poop!

Crystal litter does not clump.  Since there are no clumps of urine, the waste trap does not fill up quickly like with other automatic boxes.  In fact, the crystals shrink the poop!  After a few days, waste the size of a campfire marshmallow shrivels to the size of a hot chocolate marshmallow!  The trap holds a lot of waste because there are no clumps and the solids shrink.

Convenient & Easy to Carry

Scoop Free cartridges are pre-filled with 4.5 pounds of Fresh Step Crystal litter.  Never buy heavy bags or buckets of litter again since fresh litter comes inside each new cartridge.  Cartridges weigh less than 6 pounds.  They are easy to handle and can even be carried under your arm.  There is no dust like when pouring regular litters into standard boxes.

Disposable and Sanitary

The built-in waste trap is covered.  So when you remove the cartridge you only touch clean and sanitary surfaces!  Replacing the cartridge cover over the tray makes disposal even easier.  Tossing into the trash and inserting a new cartridge is fast and easy.

Reliable & Whisper Quiet

In accelerated lab testing, Scoop Free has run without failure for the equivalent of 100 years use by one cat!  Further, Scoop Free is 10 to 15 decibels quieter than other leading automatic boxes, operating without disturbing cats or people.  Designed by MIT engineers, Scoop Free is durable and reliable

Crystal Litter is Safe

Fresh Step Crystals are made from a special material, which is exceptionally safe for you and your cat.  Virtually dust free, the primary ingredient in the litter classified by the FDA as a “Generally Accepted As Safe” additive used in a variety of food products for humans.

Unbeatable Guarantee

Healthy cats of most ages readily adapt to Scoop Free.  Scoop Free offers an outstanding 90-day “Try me!” money back guarantee.  If you or your cats are not satisfied for any reason within the first three months, return the automatic litter box for a full refund.  There is also a one year warranty on parts and labor.

Multi Cat Households

Scoop Free is optimally designed for one or two cats.  It can be left alone for up to 20 to 30 days with one cat and 10 to 15 days with two cats. If a customer has three or more cats, he or she will need at least one Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box for every two cats.
